Circumstances can humble a man. It's either you accept that state and allow God to come to your aid or you try to prove a point that you have the ability to help yourself out. The Lord is only willing to help and save the humble. God detest a proud man, His eyes are upon the haughty that He may bring them down.
Humility is not a weakness, it's better to remain humble and wait until God lifts you, than to try lift yourself out of time and season. People may sometimes take advantage of the humble but the Lord will come for their rescue. The Lord is the help of the helpless.
The Lord delight in helping, those who have no one to help them. He has compassion on the poor and the afflicted. They that ride over the heads of the humble shall not escape in the day of the Lord's visitation. When God be for you, who shall be against you? Also, when the Lord is against you, who shall be for you? Pride in one's life is what can make the Lord to turn His back against someone.
